All in a Days Work

Posted on Fri Apr 22nd, 2022 @ 1:59pm by Lieutenant Cyrus Halsey & Lieutenant JG Marjan Qaisrani

Mission: Looking Forward, Looking Back
Location: Auxiliary Server Room

CJ walked through the passageways until he arrived at the auxiliary server room that controlled the ship's defense systems. Even though it was a weapons systems and fell under the tactical department, the other servers in here were run by the Ops department. In these cases he had to work with someone from Ops to conduct the tests needed on his equipment. Glancing at his Padd, his notes showed he was meeting an Ensign Qaisr.. whatever they will be Ensign Q. He wasn't about to butcher the poor Ensign's name. He stepped into the small room and began looking for the officer..

Marjan Qaisrani's eyes were focused on the display screen on the wall next to the server, reading through the corrupted lines of code and directing his team members -- a pair of Petty Officers -- to replace specific ones. He heard the server room's door open and remembered that he had indeed been asked by his superior officer to meet with the chief of tactical.

"Lieutenant Halsey?" he called toward the door. "I'll be with you in one moment, sir."

"That's me, I'm assuming your Ensign Q?" he said as he watched the man lead his team. "Take you your time, I'm just working through the Pre-Launch checklists, and found an anomaly with the forward port phaser targeting algorithm."

"Ensign Qaisrani, yes." It wasn't the first time someone had problems with his surname. He had a rule of helping someone with it once. Maybe twice for a non human for whom the sounds might be unfamiliar. But he understood when someone didn't want to risk the wrong pronunciation, or made an honest mistake. He finished his section with his team then turned to Halsey. "The chief said you needed my help with something?"

"Yes Sir, I need to run a data integrity check on the Tactical Weapons system then run the targeting simulations of well. It's standard procedure before leaving friendly space. I'm trying to get a jump start on the task list so I have time for a drink later. In fact I'll buy you one later if we can get this done today," CJ explained. "I will be helping you of course," he said with a smile, "I'm not gonna leave you hanging."

Marjan returned the smile and directed CJ to follow him toward a monitor and control console on one of the servers. "It will just be a moment to bring up the tactical systems programs," he explained as he worked away on the screen. "Alright, here it is. I've initiated a scan. It will show us any programming errors that have cropped up since we last did a check, which was...oh, four weeks ago. That's not good. Keep your eye on the screen for any anomalies it finds, please," he asked as he continued typing on the console.

"On it," CJ said in all seriousness as he focused on the screen. After a minute or so he pointed to a line of code, "I think this line of code of is going to cause a compiler error, we need to change the binary string on this algorithm. What do you think?"

Marjan looked over and nodded. "You're right." He found the identified line and made some edits to clean it up. "Do these figures look right to you?" He brought up a matrix which was referenced by a handful of lines of code, which related to targeting coordinates, which he thought looked incorrect.

"They look off here," CJ said and pointed to a table in the cross reference matrix. He quickly typed in the correction, "Let's try that now and see what we get."

Marjan nodded and ran a rapid simulation. "That appears to have fixed it." He finished the scan and was satisfied with the outcome. "I think we found and corrected all of the major problems. Let's run a real simulation and make sure of that though. Here." He gestured to another console and monitor on the far wall, away from his other team members who kept working on their own tasks.

CJ nodded and began another simulation, "Everything looks good, the only thing left is a live fire once we get underway. I appreciate the help Q. Now that we are finished I'm going to go say hello to my lady friend in admin and get a Poker game lined up, Do you play by any chance?"

"I do, actually," he answered, accepting the continued nickname given that CJ was obviously trying to be kind. "What rules do you normally use?"

"I prefer Texas Hold 'em, but will play whatever the majority wishes. At least until the little lady calls me home," he replied.

"She doesn't play poker?" Marjan asked.

"No she prefers to read instead, so she gets quiet time to read while I'm out playing cards. I think she's the one for me though, I'm planning on proposing somewhere exotic while we're in the Delta Quadrant. Umm Anyhow that's a uh bit more than I planned to tell," CJ said with a chuckle. "I need to move along and finish up a couple more things. I'll see ya when we get that Poker game going."

"Talk soon," Marjan said, before turning back to his previous work on the server. They would launch in just a few days, and there was still much to do.

"TheEnd
